You don’t have to wear a uniform to help your local Scout Group run. You don’t even have to work with children!
There a are variety of roles that keep Scouting happen – all voluntary. And if you have some time and a desire to see young people develop to be and do more, we’d love to hear from you.

Scout Leader
Scout Leaders wear a uniform and regularly help with evening activities and occassional weekends. Our leaders receive training, a uniform and support from a great team. The reward for being a leader is simply being able to help young people do something that they couldn't do before.
Sectional Assistant
Our group is nothing without the support of parents and carers. From supporting evenings (perhaps supervising an activity), baking cakes for fundraisers and attending camps to wash up or even try something adventurous, parents and carers provide additional support to leaders that is truly invaluable.
Trustees
8th Alton Scout Group is a charitable organisation and has legal responsibilities to the Charities Commission. We need people that are able to support the governance of the group, defining policies, ensuring sound financial practices and providing wisdom on decision making to ensure that Scouting is undertaken safely and responsibily.
Building Team
Our Building team is responsible for keeping the building, grounds and kit going. If you are handy with a hammer, marvelous with a mower or have other practical skills, we'd love to hear from you. The team ensures Scouting can happen in a safe environment and that the building is fit for hiring out.
Group Scout Leader
Our GSL is supported by a team of Deputy GSLs that together oversee Scouting at 8th Alton.
The GSL is responsible for decision making, supporting and representing the groups on the Trustee Board to ensure that young people have the resources they need to enjoy Scouting.
Section Leader
Each Colony, Pack, Troop and Unit has a Section Leader, the one in charge.
They lead their group, working with their leadership team to develop an exciting programme and run activities. Section Leaders will be the ones to go to with any questions about normal Scouting activities.
Scout Leader
Scout Leaders support Section Leaders with the running of groups.
Wearing a uniform requires training, approval and checks. Our Scout Leaders bring a host of skills and experiences to broaden the capability of our group. These leaders support our groups with enthusiasm, skill and dedication.
Section Assistant
For supporters that do not want the responsibility of being a leader, we have Section Assistants.
Often a parent, a Section Assistant regularly supports the group. Their contribution is vital in providing, for example, small group supervision while Leaders focus on the whole group.
